Abstract

Feature article on the five collecting museums in Maine devoted exclusively to visual arts. The five are the Portland Museum of Art, the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, and the academic museums at Colby, Bates and Bowdoin colleges. The author writes that the Maine art scene is missing a museum dedicated to the state's rich crafts tradition, and a recognition by state and local officials that Maine's museums are vital to the health of the state and worthy of support.
