Abstract

Gov. King has proposed offering property-tax relief in the form of direct checks to homeowners. Some legislative leaders say the idea of direct checks conjures memories of former governor John McKernan's rebate checks to taxpayers, a move that has been relegated to the list of short-sighted gimmicks employed by political leaders. Dennis Bailey, spokesman for Gov. King, said there is no comparison between the two, and that the administration is aiming for a permanent reduction in property tax bills. State representative Verdi Tripp says there are other tax-relief ideas that appear more sound than mailing checks to homeowners. Details.
