Abstract

A 1992 Maine Bureau of Parks & Recreation survey calculated that 140,000 of the 700,000 bicycles in the state are mountain bikes. Mountain bikers are laying claim to power line access trails and logging roads, and some ski areas have begun accomodating mountain bikers during the summer months. The introduction of mountain bikes into the wilds of Maine raises questions about the sport's impact on the natural environment. Details, related articles.
