Abstract

Three major conferences were held within the week on school violence: the "Prejudice, Harassment and Hate Violence Among Maine Youth" summit was organized by the Maine Leadership Consortium and held at the University of Maine; the Consortium also sponsored a second summit in Portland; and the Maine Police Chief's Association held one in Sugarloaf. Maine has three times as many civil rights cases as Massachusetts, thanks to well-trained civil rights officers, and every year a higher percentage of those involve juveniles, most of which are school-related. At the end of the UMO summit, schools were asked to commit action plans to paper for empowering students and stopping harassment.
