Abstract

"Capital Letter" piece on a $20 million bond issue which will promote research and development in the state and particularly at the Univesity of Maine (UM). Abraham Lincoln and Gov. Joshua Chamberlain booth agreed at the time UM was established as one of the nation's land grant colleges, that driver of future economic growth would be the application of the scientific method to agrilculture and industry. Editor Doug Rooks has noted that the single best thing that can be done to build up the economy of the "second Maine" is to build up the capabilities of the University of Maine.
