Abstract
"Capital Letter" piece criticizing the Roman Catholic Diocese of Maine for allowing political petition signature-gathering in Maine's churches. The petitions are related to a proposed referendum that would ban a specific, late-term or third trimester abortion procedure. But from 1984 to 1996 in Maine there were only two third trimester abortions. The author fears that the diocese has been manipulated by right-wing Catholics, who are working in concert with the Christian Civic League.
