Abstract

Feature article about the ups and downs of being gay, with interviews focusing on the personal experiences of seven gay Mainers including Erik Richard, 22; Jeff L'Heureux, 22; B.J. Crosby, 18; Justin Osgood, 20; Cathy Kidman, 34; Kyle Bouchard, 18; and Phil Gray, 56. A Penn State University study found 63 percent of gay, lesbian and bisexual youth felt "overwhelmed," and 42 percent reported a past suicide attempt. With statistics from a 1995 Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey and the Penn State University study, and information about Outright, an organization working to create safe, positive and affirming environments for members of the gay community ages 22 and under, which has centers in Bangor, Lewiston, Portland, Belfast, Brunswick, Ellsworth and Portsmouth, N.H.
