Abstract

"Maine Interview" piece with Bob Slocum, 48, superintendent for the Department of Transportation's Division 6 in Scarborough, which is responsible for plowing and maintaining about 450 miles of interstate and local highway. The division uses about 80 trucks, and crews often work shifts in excess of 15 hours. With information about the meaning of the term "snow-fighter certified," the types of trucks used, how shifts are set up, what the crews do during the summer months, and the 1976 storm that blanketed Portland with 24 inches of snow in 24 hours.
