Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a new lease negotiated by Great Northern Paper and commercial interests along the Penobscot West Branch's Cribworks, which is the most technically difficult part of the river for whitewater rafters. The new lease, which gives management authority along the Cribworks to both the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the Department of Conservation, is threatening entrepreneurs like Jim Murton who owns North Country Rivers, which has been part of Maine's rafting industry since 1983.
