Abstract

"Maine Perspectives" piece on the Maine Clean Election Act, which is being challenged in the courts by the Maine Civil Liberties Union. The new law can potentially level the playing field between candidates by offering a reasonable level of funding for all, but the author acknowledges that public finance systems for political campaigns can be too successful and create a major drain on the campaign fund, igniting a taxpayer revolt. The experiment is being closly watched and, if the law can survive its court and political challenges, perhaps it will provide some interesting results.
