Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the search for the most remote spot in the contiguous 48 states, which began in the sales promotion office of Land Rover of North America. The automaker wanted to see how close its rugged SUV model could be driven to the most remote place in the country. Susan Boswell of Cartographic Technologies in Brattleboro, Vt., claims the winner was in Utah's Basin Canyon atop the Kaiparowits Plateau. But forest ecologist David Publicover of the Appalachian Mountain Club has reported that the largest roadless area in the country is a 193,000 acre parcel in the Katahdin area of Baxter State Park, extending into the Penobscot East Branch drainage.
