Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on a Maine Woods National Park (MWNP), which was first proposed by Restore: the North Woods nearly five years ago, and the idea of switching management of the White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) to the National Park Service, which was proposed by David Carle, Restore's former director, in 1996 and is now getting some serious attention in New Hampshire. With a discussion about significant differences between the two park proposals, and significant tension over how the proposals are being pursued. Also with sidebars about Jym St. Pierre, Restore's current director, and his advocacy for the MWNP, and a sidebar on how a MWNP or WMNF might be created.
