Abstract

"Second Story" piece on air pollution, which the public worries about while resenting and resisting various emission testing programs. With special focus on a $500,000 federal grant won by the Friends of Acadia, in conjunction with the Mount Desert Island League of Towns, for a system of eight propane-powered minibuses. Recently compiled data indicate that the the experiment was a stunning success: 142,000 people rode the buses last summer, and Maine's Department of Environmental Protection and National Park Service officials were equally pleased by the bus system's positive impact on Acadia National Park.
