Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on the Land Use Regulation Commission, which has taken the first step toward a comprehensive review of Maine's 176 remote ponds, an action that could yield new additions to the protected water bodies. The commission has directed its staff to develop a new definition of remote ponds to reflect the multiple values needing regulatory oversight. The work would be done by the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, which pioneered the remote ponds concept in the early 1970s.
