Abstract

With mutual fund companies considering expanding into Maine, officials are trying to influence their decisions by offering a tax break. The Legislature's Taxation Committee recently voted against revamping the entire formula for calculating corporate income taxes, but a more limited bill exempting the mutual fund industry from corporate income tax was scheduled for hearing on Feb. 1 by the same committee. A corporate income tax break would put mutual fund companies on a similar tax footing with banks and insurance companies in Maine. The state currently collects about $100 million a year in corporate income tax.
