Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a compromise legislative bill to reduce the cost of prescription drugs in Maine sponsored by state senator Chellie Pingree, which was signed into law by Gov. King last week. The law will take effect at summer's end with the formation of an advisory board and the laying of the groundwork for the state's role as a contracted purchaser of pharmaceuticals. Retail drug prices should drop by 10-15 percent by Jan. 1, 2001, with the expectation that price cuts of up to 40 percent will follow.
