Abstract

"Feature Story" piece on children of divorce. Recent changes in Maine's divorce process help hold parents accountable to a higher standard of behavior. In 1984, for example, divorce mediation for parents with minor children became mandatory. Case management officers were also added to the family court system who can refer families to the Kids First or Families First programs, which are designed by divorce practitioners and can make workshops a prerequisite to a court hearing. Statistics in Maine are difficult to come by because record-keeping was curtailed a decade ago by budget cutters. But in 1989, there were almost 5,500 divorces in the state, involving more than 5,000 minor children.
