Abstract

"News & Issues" piece reporting that Maine activists have joined colleagues in 21 other states in launching a campaign for the removal of genetically engineered (GE) ingredients from American grocery store shelves until they are fully tested and labeled. The hazards, including the lack of federal restrictions on GE food, are too great not to speak out, according to Susan Sargent, Maine's representative for the National Environmental Trust. A group of concerned consumers will circulate a petition this fall that proposes labeling all whole or processed foods produced with GE ingredients.
