Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the Maine Economic Research Institute (MERI), a new nonprofit organization devoted to research and analysis of the intersection of politics and the economy. MERI has ranked legislators according to their votes on key issues and an assessment of their loyalty to the cause by pro-business lobbyists. According to former registered Democrat Ed McLaughlin, MERI's executive director, no Democrats made the first cut and only Sen. Marge Kilkelly of Wiscasset among Democrats seeking re-election is in the second group. Many Democrats, including Sen. Mike Michaud, D-Millinocket, chairman of the Appropriations Committee and a self-styled friend of the economy, say MERI is partisan and Michaud wants to discuss the issue with Chamber executive director Dana Connors.
