Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a new agreement between the University of Maine at Orono and the Bangor-area public bus line that will allow UMaine students living off campus to ride to school free. The trial program, developed in response to a year-long study of the university's legendary parking problems, stands to benefit the broader community as well, reducing traffic congestion along Route 2 and decreasing noise and air pollution, accidents, and commuter frustration. The $7,500 cost of the pilot program, to be paid out of the Student Comprehensive Fee, will pay for an estimated 8,000 rides this year.
