Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a compromise crafted by legislators that will help them determine the efficacy of the teacher fingerprinting law without jeopardizing the confidentiality of the records. The plan would reveal the total number of school employees who will be denied a job based on the result of the state-mandated fingerprinting and criminal background checks. The Maine Education Association supports the compromise, but only because Maine State Police have already announced that 1,329 of the 27,332 people already fingerprinted have an unspecified criminal history.
