Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the campaign against coyotes in Maine. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW) is opposing an expansion of the current control program, which is currently being considered by the Legislature. But the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine (SAM) favors eliminating more coyotes to protect northern Maine's beleaguered deer population, highlighting the on-going struggle between IFW and SAM over wildlife management. George Smith, SAM's executive director, says coyotes now number between 16,000 and 20,000 statewide.
