Abstract

"Feature Story" piece on the VICA Skill Championships where once a year, students from Maine's 27 regional technology centers and seven technical colleges convene for a day of competition. VICA used to stand for Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, but according to state coordinator Don Jalbert, it doesn't stand for anything anymore because the word "vocational" developed a negative image. Jalbert said people should think of the competition as an Odyssey of the Mind for the skilled trades. This year students in 52 different areas of expertise were represented.
