Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the fate of an environmentally sensitive 450-acre saltwater heath in Corea, which is uncertain as the U.S. Navy prepares to leave its base in nearby Winter Harbor. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hopes to manage and protect most of the undeveloped portion of the heath by incorporating it into the Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge. But the town's base closure committee says it might recommend that the town claim a strip of fragile ocean frontage for its own, along with the site's built-up portion, citing its future development potential. James Lowell, a Boston investment counselor, has already indicated an interest in the area's development potential.
