Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the fresh water crisis on Monhegan Island and concern about the issuance of new building permits. Some 1,000 visitors a day are not uncommon on Monhegan in August, but First Selectman David Boegel said it's not the day-trippers pressuring the water supply as much as tourists who stay overnight. Boegel said supply isn't the problem but rather the delivery. Fresh water is pumped to tanks for storage, but the island needs 3,000 gallons of water a day. Theresa Hoffman, commissioner of the Land Use Regulation Commission, said the island should undertake an island-wide water conservation initiative.
