Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) proposal that would restrict mercury levels in fresh water to a bioaccumulation factor of 1 million. According to David Van Wie, director of the Bureau of Land and Water Quality, about half of Maine's lakes are currently above that criterion. Most members of the Legislature's Natural Resources Committee support the DEP proposal, but committee member Rep. Robert Daigle, R-Arundel, does not and refers to the entire mercury debate as hyperbole. The committee is expected to vote on the bill on May 11.
