Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a legislative bill that would have given grants to help 250 customers of Portland-Bangor Waste Oil Services Inc. cover the cost of cleaning up what is now a Superfund site in Plymouth. The Legislature's Natural Resources Committee decided instead to offer the businesses interest-free loans through the Finance Authority of Maine, with the hope that payment may eventually be subsidized with a combination of federal and state funds. Over $8 million has already been spent on studies and clean-up at the site, and officials estimate an additional $7 million to $10.4 million with be needed.
