Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on the University of Maine in Orono, a land-grant university campus famed for bioengineering research, resource management studies, and success in alternative energy competitions. Though its own energy costs are spiraling out of control, its campaigns to rein in electricity use have been largely ignored, and its new capital projects are characterized by penny-wise and pound-foolish planning while routine maintenance lags. With special focus on an the 21st Century Campus conference held in April in Bar Harbor that featured speakers and workshops addressing campus issues of energy conservation, waste reduction, sustainable landscaping, recycling, composting, reduction of toxins, supporting local businesses and other related issues. With a list of incentives for college campuses committing to environmental awareness and sustainable practices.
