Abstract

"News" piece on field research by education policy specialist David Silvernail, who has been trying to identify common denominators at "high achieving" school districts in Maine that spend less money than the state average per student. Examples include Caribou, Monmouth, and school districts based in Hampden and Cumberland. Silvernail says the common denominator is not a particular program, but a whole set of values, and such schools are just better at ensuring that all students achieve their best. Silvernail is scheduled to present his conclusions at a State Board of Education meeting Sept. 12.
