Abstract

"News" piece on border checkpoints between Maine and Canada, which have become the cause of daily traffic jams in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Restricting who is admitted to the U.S. is a paramount concern in Washington, particularly because Canada's loose immigration policies may have made that country a haven for terrorist cells. In the meantime, Congress is moving to triple border security with Canada using agencies such as the Customs Service and the Border Patrol. A Senate subcommittee has recommended spending $25 million more on border security, adding 18 position in Maine.
