Abstract

Maine scallopers will face tough new regulations beginning March 1, including fewer days at sea, a moratorium on new fishing permits and mandatory reporting. The new rules, aimed at restoring overfished stocks, are being protested by the state's scallopers. Scallops are Maine's sixth most valuable fishery, with 1992 landings totalling 1.4 million pounds, for a worth of $7.3 million. Details.
