Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on the Twin Cities of Lewiston and Auburn, where last year more than 500 residents were quizzed by members of the Maine Community Foundation, which participated in an attempt by Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government to gauge the nation's level of social capital. The term "social capital" refers to those substances that count for most in the daily lives of people: namely good will, fellowship, sympathy and social intercourse among individuals and family who make up a social unit. The Twin Cities showed high levels of political civic involvement, general trust of others, and scored above-average levels for interracial tolerance.
