Abstract

"News" piece on the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW), which has too little money and too few biologists. During the annual Sportsman's Congress in Augusta on Nov. 30, George Smith, executive director of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine (SAM), criticized IFW's management approach while recognizing that budget problems are limiting the agency's programs and new initiatives. IFW estimates a budget deficit of $8 million by 2005 and is considering a 50 percent increase in fishing, hunting and recreational vehicle license fees, which is a measure that SAM opposes. IFW was also criticized for doing nothing about illegal stocking of non-native fish. But the agency has only three field biologists, each managing an area the size of Connecticut.
