Abstract

"News" piece on a University of Maine student who spoke to university trustees on Jan. 14 to protest the new "energy surcharge" fee, which adds $2 for every credit hour on students' tuition bills. Fred Nehring, 46, who is an engineering student, said the new fee cost him $28 last semester. Nehring said energy costs are going down, and students should have more input in what they support when they pay their fees. Joanne Yestramsky, the University of Maine System's treasurer, said now that energy costs have dropped, the fee is being used to help pay for new and more energy-efficient heating and lighting systems.
