Abstract

"News" piece on LD 2038, a legislative bill sponsored by Rep. Zachary Matthews, D-Winslow, which would require the state to develop a simple written risk assessment for lead exposure that would be used by primary-care physicians to administer to the families of all 1- and 2-year-olds in their practices. The bill is supported by the Lead Action Project in Portland, but many physicians are not convinced that childhood lead poisoning is a widespread problem and Maine Medical Association lobbyist Andrew MacLean says mandated assessment and counseling will place an additional burden on already busy medical practices.
