Abstract

The Northern Forest Lands Council recently issued a draft report that including 33 recommendations designed to keep the Northern Forest intact. Among the recommendations is one advocating a switch from market-based property taxes to taxes based on current land use. One of the council's findings was that inheritance taxes on estates valued at more than $600,000 could force the heirs to sell the property at development prices rather than keep it in forestry.
