Abstract

"News" piece on the Maine Technology Institute (MTI), a state agency that makes grants to young, tech-based entrepreneurs looking for research and development funds. MTI wants its records exempted from the state's Freedom of Access law, which safeguards the public's right to know about government entities acting in the public interest. The agency's clients fear they'll lose trade secrets and intellectual property if their records are open to inspection. MTI's $6.4 million annual budget is funded through state and federal taxes. The Maine Press Association strongly opposes the exemption.
