Abstract

"News" piece on Joseph Westphal, the incoming chancellor of the University of Maine System. Westphal's salary, at $175,000, will make him Maine's highest paid public servant, but it stall ranks in the bottom 20 percent nationally. The median salary of heads of similar-sized universities elsewhere is $250,000. Westphal's salary is $15,000 more than his predecessor, and he says Maine has no choice but to raise faculty salaries as well, if it wants to compete as a research and development center. Currently, UMaine faculty pay ranks 47 among the 50 states.
