Abstract

There are an estimated 45,000 businesses in Maine, 33,000 of which employ less than 20 people. The Maine Department of Economic and Community Development's Office of Business Development assists small businesses in the state, as does Maine & Company, a business attraction agency created two years ago. With information on small businesses in Maine, and profiles of Jim Horowitz of Oxford Aviation, which has 40 employees and annual sales of $2.5 million; Ann Tenpenny of Tex's Tortilla's of Westbrook, whose ten employees produce 35,000 dozen flour tortillas each month; and Jean Hoffman of Newport Data Associates of Brunswick, which has ten employees and international sales of $1.2 million annually.
