Abstract

The Maine Better Transportation Association last spring published "Maine's Highways and Bridges--The Funding Crisis," a report calling for more public funding for the state's highways, roads and bridges. Opponents of widening the Maine Turnpike are using data in the report as backing for directing state resources toward projects other than the turnpike. Maria Fuentes, executive director of MBTA, works for Maine Citizens for Jobs & Safety, the group supporting the widening of the turnpike. Fuentes says widening opponents are trying to present themselves as road advocates, when they really have been pushing for taking money away from roads and into alternative transportation studies.
