Abstract

The 1993 Maine soft-shell clam harvest was around 130,000 bushels, worth $9 million, a 15 percent decline from 1992 and not far from the historic low of 97,000 bushels in 1959. Harvests in some heavily managed flats in southern Maine have held steady or even increased, according to preliminary data. Management seems to work, and shellfish experts agree that a regional approach is the best strategy. Details.
