Abstract

The New England Fisheries Management Council is likely to recommend a system of closures in the Gulf of Maine to reduce pressure on cod. The action comes after other efforts have failed, and cod levels have fallen to record lows. Fisheries managers and some fishermen say the action may come to late. Ted Ames of Stonington, a former head of the Maine Gillnetters Association, says the collapse of the fishery is due to poor management. Details.
