Abstract

Island residents in Casco Bay are contending with brown-tail rash, a rash caused by the brown-tail moth caterpillar. Brown-tail caterpillars have a hair that is hollow, barbed and filled with a histamine-like substance produced by poison glands. The rash is thought to be caused by a combination of the physical penetration of the hair and the chemical reaction that ensues. Dick Bradbury, an entomologist with the Maine Forest Service, questions whether eradication efforts will work against the moth, pointing out that the creature is well-adapted to survive. Details.
