Abstract

A Canadian plan to build a 70-foot-high fish ladder at Grand Falls on the upper St. John River would probably result in an increase of the river's salmon population, at the expense of brook trout. The possibility of 35,000 salmon returning upriver each year to spawn has salmon fishermen supporting the plan, while fans of the brook trout oppose the $3.5 million project, which would be built 15 miles south of Van Buren.
