Abstract

The consulting firm of Northrop Devine & Tarbell Inc., which is helping Edwards Manufacturing prepare for relicensing the Edwards Dam in Augusta, has petitioned the National Marine Fisheries Service to remove the shortnose sturgeon from protection under the Endangered Species Act in the Androscoggin and Kennebec rivers. The firm found a 1987 NMFS document suggesting that the sturgeon be considered for removal from the ESA, but NMFS officials say there is not enough data to show the sturgeon population is on the increase.
