Abstract

In the summer of 1946, William Vassily, age 9, checked out "The Baby Whale, Sharp Ears," by John Beaty from the Portland Public Library. On September 8, 2006, he returned it to the Children's Department with a check for $440.16, representing his overdue charges at two cents per day. When Vassily's family moved from Portland to New York in 1946, the book was inadvertently packed and moved with them. When Vassily discovered the overdue book, he knew he wanted to return it, along with a contribution to the Children's Department.
