Abstract

Undersea mussel farming off Vinalhaven produces a large volume of a high-quality product, but it is physically demanding labor. In Maine, 20 mussel boats fish undersea leased areas totaling 700 acres, but because they must negotiate with the Department of Marine Resources in Augusta rather than fishing industry operatives on the wharves, they are sometimes isolated from other fishermen.
