Abstract

A single school of Atlantic menhaden, or pogies, can filter a million gallons of water a minute, reducing ocean oxygen to toxic levels for other sea life. On August 10, the mephitic atmosphere created by oily pogies off South Bristol killed 2,000 lobsters and countless crabs and fish. The only solution now available is a combination of fish-reduction facilities and making pogie fishing more lucrative to the large boats. Details.
