Abstract

State transportation officials have designated the new bridge that will connect Portland and South Portland as the Portland-South Portland Bridge, but some people believe that such an important structure should have a special name -- Although state representative Herbert Adams, D-Portland, plans to introduce a bill in the Legislature that will designate the bridge as the Joshua L Chamberlain Bridge, in honor of Maine's famous Civil War hero, one such bill has already been shot down, and public officials are reluctant to get involved because of the furor set off in 1982 when the Portland City Council changed the name of the Portland International Jetport to the Edmund S Muskie International Jetport
