Abstract

A new Knox County Jail was completed in Rockland four years ago, rendering the old Union Street facility, built in 1868, useless. County commissioners voted to demolish the old structure, and just hours before the demolition was to begin a committee was formed to try and preserve it. The group was acting in response to the changes that had occurred in the town over the past few decades, including the 1970 dismantling of a granite post office that had served the town since the mid-1800s.
